Zoo "Original"

Malaco

This bag of gummies got into my hands in a very particular way. A friend of mine gave them to me, along with the story about how these are her absolute favourite candies from where she grew up (Sweden). She explained that the thing she loved most about these is that they haven’t changed since she was a kid. I’ve said it before with my own reviews, nostalgia has interesting effects on how we judge food, particularly candy. She was so happy about me trying her childhood favourite candy that I almost felt a bit of her nostalgia eating them myself.

Objectively, these gummies are tasty, maybe nothing ground breaking or super fancy, but they’re tasty. There are a few mysteries that I can’t figure out about them, but it doesn’t really make them worse, just a little mysterious. The first mystery is the fact that each and every one of these gummies is a monkey. I imagine that there’s a story behind that, either as a part of the marketing or something to do with the creation of this candy, but it’s a little strange. The package does only show the one gummy, but it also has some cartoon drawings of other animals, as well as the fact that the name of the candy is “Zoo”, implying that there should be a collection of animals. Fortunately I like monkeys, so I’m not disappointed.

The second strange thing about these is the flavour. The package calls it original, but I’m not really sure what original is supposed to taste like. I would describe it as some kind of fruity, almost berry flavour, but I would have a hard time figuring out exactly what fruit it’s supposed to be. If I ignore that mystery, I would at least describe the fruity flavour as tasty.

I can understand why my friend feels nostalgia for these gummies. The flavour is unique and the shape is kind of fun (I mean who wouldn’t want to eat a bag of monkeys). I won’t say that they’re the best gummies I’ve ever eaten, but I will say that they’re unique and tasty. If I grew up eating these, I too would miss them, as there are no really gummy candies like it anywhere in the world.
