Is a fruit snack just a snack that tastes like fruit? I think my answer to this age old candy question is both yes and no. Fruit snacks fall into one of two categories; synthetic and real. The real fruit snacks likely contain mostly real juices, but more importantly they taste more like the real fruit that they’re supposed to be based on. Synthetic fruit snacks don’t normally have to have any real fruit in them at all, and when they do, it’s not necessarily the fruit that they’re supposed to taste like. There is a certain category of synthetic fruit flavours that taste nothing like the fruit they’re representing, but for years we’ve been conditioned to associate this fake flavour with the fruit. Fake banana, and fake cherry flavours are a prime example of this kind of synthetic fruit flavour.
These Welch’s Fruit Snacks fall under the category of real fruit flavours. They taste and likely contain a great deal of real grapes, and you know what, they aren't too bad either. I think these might even be perfect with a peanut butter sandwich and a glass of milk. I can’t say that there’s anything that special about these gummies, they taste fine, but there’s nothing cool about the shape or flavour. I think that moms will buy these, kids won't mind them, but I think they could be a little more fun.
When it comes to gummies there are about a hundred options, sure these might fill the gap for some, but they’re not the most interesting choice around.
