I always think of eucalyptus as being and lighter more natural tasting mint. It tastes more like a fresh mint leaf than the more common mint you taste in candies. The best thing about eucalyptus over mint is the strength of the menthol flavour and sensation. The menthol flavour is what gives these candies their cool feeling, eucalyptus candies generally have a much more subtle menthol feel, so they’re not as cool as some of the intense mints out there. This is particularly nice if you’re eating these someplace cool, because a strong menthol kick on a really cold day could kill you.
Besides the menthol feeling of these candies, flavour wise these eucalyptus chews offer two flavours, there’s certainly the eucalyptus mint flavour, but that only seems to come about as almost an aftertaste. There’s also a really strong flavour coming off of these that’s hard to pin down, I want to say licorice, but that might be because I’m expecting licorice from anything Icelandic. I might say that it’s not licorice, but actually a slightly soapy flavour, that eventually turns minty. It’s hard to pin down, but I really prefer the aftertaste of these chews over the main flavour.
Texture wise these candies start off for the worst, but improve after a few seconds in your mouth. When you pull them out of the package you expect them to be a flavourless hard puck of awfulness. But after a few seconds they turn into a slimy soft puck that’s actually very comfortable to suck on. I don’t think these are designed to be chewed, as they’re really hard to get through, but as a sucking candy they’re very pleasant. Makes me wonder why hard sucking candies are a thing at all. Sucking on a soft squishy candy is much more pleasant.
The flavour of these isn’t the best, but the aftertaste and texture are fantastic.
