I’m a little confused about the theme of this candy. The word’s “love potion” is on the package, and the window into the bag is shaped like a bottle. There are also a lot of hearts all over this package. The candy itself is just various colours of squares of jelly and marshmallows. There’s a kind of sandwich theme to the candy similar to Licorice Allsorts, but nothing really related to love or chemistry.
When I saw this candy I was a little excited, even though it didn’t make sense thematically. For some reason I thought I was getting some fun gummy squares with possibly different textures among the various layers of gummy. I was sort of right, however the white centre turned out to be marshmallow and not gummy at all. I should mention that I’m not a huge fan of many marshmallow treats. The exception is either marshmallow as an ingredient, marshmallows that are toasted and in some cases high end handmade marshmallows. I guess that make me a marshmallow snob. The problem here is that the marshmallows between the two gummies were pretty low quality and I’m not a fan.
The problem I had with these marshmallows is a common problem I have with most cheaper marshmallows, they didn’t really have any flavour and the texture was was too spongy. The gummy layers were okay, but they were much better when I peeled them off the cheap marshmallow and ate them on their own. I think these would have been much better if they had a harder centre bit, almost like a fondant. I also think, in general, the flavours of these candies is pretty weak. The gummies were a little flavourful, but the marshmallows were really bland. Neither one really impressed me flavour wise.
I have a bias here because I’m really picky when it comes to marshmallows. If the marshmallow was better I probably would have liked this more, but I’d probably have been really happy with something else entirely. While I’m happy they gave me two different textures, the textures weren’t different enough and the quality wasn’t amazing. The best way I can describe this is that it’s two okay gummy slices that were ruined by a cheap marshmallow layer.
