At first I was going to write about this candy as a boring gummy that was okay, but isn’t really that creative. Then I realized that this isn’t a boring candy, it’s just a candy caught up in a strange story. What I mean is that the theme of this candy is completely out of my grasp. Maybe if I could read more of the package I might understand it better, but maybe even then I would need some context given to me. As a person from North America, the idea of eating apple flavoured dogs paws that gush liquid is so strange that it actually threw off my objective eye. I was so confused that I didn’t even think about some of the creative qualities of this treat.
First of all I think this might be the first time I’ve ever eaten gummy dogs paws. It’s hard to imagine that there’s anything left in gummy form that hasn’t been done, but I can’t say I’ve ever eaten dogs paws before. If you think about it, this treat as a gummy actually makes sense when depicting animals paws as the texture is very similar. Not that I’ve eaten animal paws, but I have touched a few in my life. The flavour, apple, is not one of my favourite flavours for candy, but these aren’t horrible. Apple is also a fairly rare flavour in the gummy world. I can’t even think of any time that I’ve eaten a bag of gummy treats where each and every one of them was apple. So while I’m not a huge fan of apple flavour, it was interesting to see it in this context.
The gushing centre was also done very well. It gushed well enough to make it fun, but not so much that it was overly messy. It was a little odd biting into a candy that felt like a real animal paw and then have it gush out, but I’m guessing that’s not done for horrific effect.
Objectively these gummies are very good. The apple flavour is subtle yet tasty, the gushing is fun, and the shape is at the very least cute. It could be that there’s some kind of cultural (or even written on the package) back story to why kids would want to eat animal paws that I just don’t know. I decided today that instead of letting that ruin the treat, I would celebrate it. If there doesn’t happen to be any kind of backstory to it, then these still merit some credit for being delightfully weird while still working well as gummies.
