Kakigohri Gummy

Kabaya

It’s not often that I start a review unable to come up with words to describe a candy. I wouldn’t say that these are the best gummies I’ve ever had, they may not be the most unique either. They’re also not the worst gummies either. They’re also not average by any stretch of the imagination. These gummies are so many things all wrapped into one. What could have been a simple design, gummies that look like snow cones (or shave ice), is something a little more interesting.

I’ll start off with the most unique tiny detail about these that I frankly don’t understand. There are three different flavours of gummies available in this bag, yellow (lemon), blue (soda or ramune) and red (strawberry). As Japanese flavours go, these are pretty standard. The blue is a little bit unique to the western palette, but the rest are pretty basic. The interesting thing however is the sugar that coats these candies. It’s because the yellow and the blue have bigger sugar crystals than the red. So out of this bag of three gummies, two are crunchier than the other one. I’m not sure why they did this, but it’s done on purpose since it’s both featured on the package and it’s consistent with all the gummies. Maybe the goal was the simulate different levels of shaved ice?

Flavour wise I was a little disappointed. Shave Ice and snow cones are often flavoured with very bold and distinct flavours, these were not so much. They were slightly different from one another, but in general they all just tasted fruity. I would think if you’re going to go through the effort of coating one particular gummy with a different sugar, that you might be very particular with the flavours as well. I was also a little disappointed by how small and how little detail these gummies had. They were just tiny little cones of colour with white bases. If they made them a little bigger I feel like they might have been able to give them a little more detail.

The idea of making a snow cone into gummy form is fairly unique. The odd different sugar texture is weird, but also very unique. The flavours were fine but could have been better, and the shape was a little bit disappointing. I had fun eating these, but the sugar thing did confuse me a little.
