This is a candy from my childhood, but one that didn’t keep going into my adulthood. I can’t remember the last time I’ve eaten a Zingy Zap, it’s likely been many years. I can pretty much guarantee that I haven't had one since starting Candy Critic. I’m not really sure why that’s the case, because as a kid, it was one of my go to bulk candy choices. For some reason, until today I’ve always just passed it by at the bulk store and I don’t think I’ve ever seen them available in packages.
I’ve never even thought about reviewing Zingy Zaps until today. Almost as if it disappears from sight every time I pass it in the bulk food store. I’m sure this has more to do with my own psychology than the candy itself. After having eaten a few of them I can say that the memory of them returned and I’m totally satisfied.
Zingy Zaps are both very plain and unique at the same time. They might be plain to me only because I ate them so often as a kid. I guess objectively you could also call them simple, since they’re just compressed powder candy with a hard candy shell. However, I can’t think of any other candy that has this makeup. Flavour wise they’re also really simple, lemon, lime, grape, orange and cherry are 5 of the most common flavours out there. While the flavours are what I would call fake fruit flavours, they’re spot on to what you’d want those fake flavours to taste like.
My one question about these is if you’re supposed to suck or crunch Zingy Zaps. I’ve always chosen to crunch them, but in the interest of science I decided to try and suck one. It’s wasn’t a complete failure, but at the start it was fairly weird and flavourless. Then as the candy broke down it dissolved very quickly. It was a little weird to suck, but that could be my own bias again.
The real question I guess is now that I’ve had them again, will I ever seek them out?
