There are two very distinct features about these chips that makes them work. Instantly you can’t help but notice how thick and dense they are. I purchased these at an airport while flying through Japan. The trip home was long and the bag of chips took a beating, however the chips themselves did not break at all. This might be the toughest chips I’ve ever eaten. The good news is that the hard crunch is actually really nice to eat as well, a little more challenging than regular chips, but really satisfying to crunch as well.

The second feature worth noting is how much these chips actually taste like yakimo. Yakimo is a popular treat in Japan that’s basically just a slow roasted sweet potato. The slow roasting really gives these potatoes a distinctive flavour. I was worried that these chips would just taste like the many other sweet potato chips I’ve had in the past, but somehow they really managed to get the slow roasted flavour perfectly. These are not oily at all, which makes them very yakimo like.

The other great flavour feature is they managed to balance the sweet flavour of the yakimo perfectly. Yakimo is subtly sweet, but not sweet and salty. These chips are exactly that, they remind you that yakimo is a sweet treat, but not a super sweet treat. There’s a slight perfumed sweet potato flavour that truly dominates just like the traditional yakimo.
