Le Chocolat Des Francais "Lait Caramel & Sel De Guerande"

Le Chocolat Des Francais

There are a few countries in Europe that are said to make the best chocolate in the world, and France is often put on that list. I’m not sure I agree with that, or at the very least of the best chocolate making countries in Europe, France is not at the top. It’s not to say that there are no good French chocolatiers, quite the opposite, there are some amazing chocolate treats from France. However, there are some countries in Europe where almost all of the chocolate is great, even the cheaper stuff. In France however, I’ve come across a few chocolate brands that just didn’t cut it as much as some of the others.

This bar is unfortunately a good example of just that. I’m not saying that this bar is bad, it’s absolutely fine, but it’s not better than just fine. As for the chocolate itself, it was smooth and creamy and had a perfectly fine flavour. I could have used a little more cocoa and a little less cream, but maybe that’s a personal choice as opposed to something that makes chocolate great. While the chocolate was fine, the other additions to this bar were just confusing and really didn’t improve the bar at all.

The package advertises “Milk Chocolate & Salted Caramel”, but I would just describe it as milk chocolate with some kind of weird grit. If you really thought about it you might taste a little extra salty/sweet flavour, but for the most part that chocolate flavour takes over. It could be a cultural thing, but it feels like there should have been some kind of liquid caramel as well, which there is none. Maybe in France a toffee can also be considered a caramel. However, even if this is the case the pieces of toffee would have to be way bigger and the salt a little more prominent. Unfortunately if you make your hard pieces too small and cover up the flavour, you’re left with a grittiness, and that’s not a good texture for chocolate.

It’s an okay bar, it’s fairly average, except for the fact that it’s kind of gritty. It seems like the folks at Le Chocolat Des Francais could have done better, but something really went wrong with the design of this bar.
