This is a great example of a very simple and uncomplicated gummy that’s still very unique. This is not the first time I’ve ever had a black current flavoured gummy, but they are very rare. I think it’s a huge shame too. I’m pretty sure I’ve said this before on this site, but black current is probably one of the most underused flavours in candy. It’s also a very good flavour to have in gummy form. Berries in general work very well in gummy form, but when you make it a berry that’s underused it just seems a little bit more special.

Other than the flavour, this gummy is fairly simple. It’s on the softer end of gummy candies, but that works well with the black current flavour since black current is a fairly soft berry. The shape is a little odd as it looks more like a cluster of berries or maybe even an oddly shaped raspberry, but honestly that didn’t ruin this candy at all for me. I guess I would have been more impressed if they made them black current shaped, but I’m not complaining either.

The other odd thing about this candy is the slice of apple that appears on the package. It’s not uncommon for candy makers to add apple juice to naturally fruit flavoured treats to sweeten them up and add a little extra flavour. It is however odd to advertise doing that. Most of the time I have to read about the added apple flavour in the ingredients, but the folks at Jojo’s have decided to add a subtle slice of apple to the package as well. I’m not sure if that’s a marketing idea, or a legal necessity. Much like the odd shape of these gummies, the apple on the package did not really change my opinion on these.

This is a really simple gummy, but I would totally recommend you give it a try. It also seems like a great way to introduce people to black current treats who may have never tried them before. The flavour is unmistakably black current, but isn’t too extreme.
