Haribo Worms

Haribo

This might be one of the last classic candies that I have yet to review. The gummy worm has been around since at least the 1980s, maybe longer. It’s pretty much been a part of my candy eating life since as long as I can remember, however it’s taken me many years (maybe even a few decades) to review it. There are many reasons why treats like this get overlooked, it could be that I thought I already reviewed it, or it could be that I’m constantly distracted by new treats that I just can’t see the classics anymore. No matter the reason I’m reviewing them now, but I feel like I might be looking at these differently than I might have many years ago.

The main thing that’s changed since I first started this site is that I’m looking at candy more objectively than I used to. Originally I didn’t have as much context about the candies of the world, so I used to review based on my feelings, rather than comparing it to other treats already out there. In the case of these worms I’ve got a new respect for the fact that they’re kind of gross, but in a good way. Of all the gummy treats I’ve reviewed in the past, gummy worms probably have the texture closest to the real thing. In the past I’ve complained that gummy worms don’t look like worms, and they still don’t, but they certainly feel like worms (or at least I think they do as I’ve never bit into a real worm before).

Flavour wise they’re pretty basic, but if you look at them historically they were kind of revolutionary. I’m not sure if Haribo invented the gummy worm (they did invent the gummy bear), so I’m not sure if I can give them credit for the creation and flavour choices. I do know that Haribo gummy worms have been around for a while, so it’s possible that they’re at least responsible for making this squirmy and fruity flavoured treat popular.

If you’ve never had a gummy worm before, I’m kind of surprised. They seem like a candy that you can find just about anywhere. They feel a little gross, and even the theme is a little gross, but in a fun way. So if you love them, keep loving them, if you’ve never tried them, you really should give them a try at least once.
