There’s absolutely no reason that this candy shouldn’t work. I also appreciate what I assume is a clever play on words with the name. I’m not sure if the word “puds” has some kind of meaning in England, but my assumption is that in this case at least it’s short for the word pudding. For those that aren’t familiar with the English expression, pudding isn’t just a gloppy sweet treat you often find in cans, it is a general term for dessert. This is a piece of taffy that is apparently flavoured to a popular British dessert called sticky toffee pudding. It’s all kind of complicated, but it seems like something that not only makes sense, but should work really well.
The main reason it should work in that the key ingredient in sticky toffee pudding is toffee. It’s basically a sponge cake dripping with toffee that you often cover in either ice cream or custard. It’s one of my go to British desserts when I visit, so I was kind of excited about this taffy. My guess was that it was going to be a chewier sticky toffee pudding without any cake. The results on the other hand had me baffled.
Making toffee into a taffy is so simple, in fact there are several types of toffee that have a taffy texture. Maybe to make it sticky toffee themed they could add a slightly creamier taffy to a rich sweet toffee. Instead what they seem to have done is given me some kind of sour taffy. If I close my eyes I might taste a slight toffee after taste, but for the most part this just tastes like a weird random citrus taffy. It’s very disappointing flavour wise.
My only guess is that they were trying to replicate the creamy custard (or ice cream) and went too far with the sour. If that’s the case then these taste like sticky toffee pudding with way too much cream, and the cream has spoiled. That actually makes these taste even worse. It’s really disappointing because a sticky toffee candy should be easy to make in a taffy form, but for some reason this is just way off.
