Wagon Wheels

Burton’s

I’m not sure I know exactly what a Wagon Wheel is. The only definition I can give it is that it’s often made with two cookies covered in chocolate that sandwich marshmallow between them. As a kid I seem to have memories of the cookie being fairly lights and the marshmallow plentiful. As a Canadian kid I seem to have memories of them disappearing sometime in the 90s, or at the very least becoming much less popular. It could be that it was an American thing that I could no longer find in Canadian stores, or it could be that I just never really loved marshmallow, so when I started to get older and spend my own money I rarely bought them.

What I’m saying is, I remember a different Wagon Wheel than what is presented to me here. I seem to remember a lighter cookie that felt more like a digestible, and I also remember more marshmallow. The chocolate on the other hand seems exactly the same, fairly thin and doesn’t really do much except make this cookie sandwich a brown colour. The cookies on this Wagon Wheel feels a little more dense, and almost a little more grainy. The cookie is also the main part of the flavour, since there’s a little less marshmallow too. As mentioned above, the chocolate really doesn’t provide much more than sticky fingers and decoration.

The fact that the marshmallow is far more subdued than I remember and the cookie more flavourful, I think I might like these a little more than the memory of the Wagon Wheel I had as a kid. Upon further research, it appears that there is a different Wagon Wheel available in North America, and the photo on the internet reflect the one I had a bit more. I’d be interested in doing a side by side comparison some day, if for no other reason than to have a Wagon Wheel from my childhood again.

I don’t know if Wagon Wheels are still a popular treat today, but for some reason I feel like there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be.
