It should be known, before you read this review, that I am not a fan of most sweetened coconut treat. I don’t mind a little coconut added to treat, but most of the time when coconut is the featured ingredient I’m not a big fan. I accept that coconut can add an interesting flavour to some treats, but I feel like when there’s a lot of coconut it just doesn’t work. I particularly don’t like it when candy companies sweeten the coconut, it’s just a sickly combination that doesn’t sit well with me.
I say all this because if you happen to be a fan of sweetened coconut, then you’ll probably really like this bar. If I’m to look at this bar objectively, I think it might be one of the better sweetened coconut bars out there. The first and biggest difference with this bar is the quality of the chocolate that’s covering the coconut. The Bounty has a fairly thick coating of chocolate and it’s very tasty and smooth. This works to really balance out with the sweet coconut flavour. I feel like this makes for a more balanced bar.
I also feel like the shreds of coconut are a good size. I feel like some candy bar companies shred their coconut a little too fine, but this seems like a really good size. The texture was chewy, but also had a bit of that resistance you get from chewing on coconut. I’ve also had a few treats (mostly hand made) that have shreds that are too large. These seem just nice and give the bar a good chew in the centre.
This is a classic candy bar and it’s taken me years to review it. I think it’s because I’m not personally a big fan of coconut based bars. It was a bit better than I thought it would be thanks to the fine quality chocolate, but it was still very coconut forward.
