I’m not sure if sunflower seed butter cups are common anywhere else, but after trying these out I’m starting to think they should be. There is a very particular market for these cups and it’s for people who like a sweet treat but not too sweet. It’s not that it’s a blend of salty and savoury, as Reese has done many times. Instead these have a certain lack of sweetness, the seeds provide a savoury flavour, instead of just adding salt to balance out the sweetness.
Sunflower seed butter is a fairly subtle butter that doesn’t seem to be very sweet at all. It could be just me, but I find that peanut butter has a natural sweetness about it, anything with pecan even sweeter. Sunflower seed butter on the other hand is much more savoury. Rather than try and compete with the savoury flavour of the sunflower seed butter, the folks at Trader Joe’s have decided to work with the natural flavour by blending it with a slightly bitter dark chocolate. I wasn’t sure if this would work, but it really does.
The flavour of the sunflower seeds blend very well with the dark chocolate. I will say that it feels like the dark chocolate does dominate a little bit, but there is something that accompanies it, and if you just take a bite of the centre bit of the cup you know that it’s sunflower seed butter. It’s as if the sunflower seed butter is an accompaniment to the dark chocolate. It changes the flavour giving you something slightly savoury but well matched.
I wasn’t sure if I’d like these cups, and I feel like there’s many ways to ruin this combination, but the folks at Trader Joe’s seem to have really got it right. If you’re a person that likes their sweet treats to be a little less sweet, I feel like these cups would work for you.
