Pizza Party Freeze Dried Candy

Bubble Gum Kids Inc

There’s a lot to this candy to love, and a lot that you may dislike or at the very least not understand. This candy represents the latest trend of freeze drying every kind of treats or sweets. The results you often get with freeze drying candy is that the candy doubles in size, becomes super crunchy and filled with air. Basically it takes most candies and makes the texture almost the complete opposite as to what it was before. I’m not totally certain if doing this improves the candy, but it is different and that’s always interesting. Fortunately the flavour stays the same, so that can be a plus.

With this particular candy it is a little confusing at first. The problem is that for some reason the folks at Bubble Gum Kids thought that the best way to sell freeze dried lemon gummies was to associate it with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I’ll just make this clear, there’s nothing pizza or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles about these candies. I don’t understand why they decided to do this tie in, and I feel like anyone buying these because they thought there was a connection will just be disappointed.

If you take away the TMNT crossover, these are a fun, crunchy treat. The texture is unique, and the flavour is a nice (albeit fake) lemon flavour. I’m not convinced this trend of freeze drying candy is going to last forever, but it’s kind of nice to experience the difference that this process can do. I would most certainly taste more treats freeze dried, but I’m not convinced that it’s actually improving the treats, but instead just making them different. I’d love to try a side by side comparison to see if the flavour has changed and if the texture is better.

One thing worth noting is that these were not very cheap. Maybe in other parts of the world these treats are cheaper, but where I got them (Canada), they were kind of pricey. The other thing is that since they’re filled with air, a bag that might contain 20 or 30 gummy treats normally will only have about 10 in freeze dried form.

These are a fun treat to try, but it feels more like an experiment than a new revolution in candy. Maybe I’ll find that I’m wrong in 10 years, but if that’s the case I’ll be happy to try some more.
