Snickers "Malaysia"

Mars

Just by looking at the photo on this review, you might see little to no difference between this bar and the common Snickers bar you find in other parts of the world. If you saw it in person, the difference is much more obvious. This bar is much smaller than your average Snickers bar, I would venture to say that this bar is less than half the size of an average Snickers bar. It’s also not like the small snack (or Halloween) sized Snickers bar because it’s fairly long and narrow in proportion. I would describe the size and shape of this bar to be similar to large adult finger (I just put my finger next to it to check).

I’ve mentioned many times on this site that size and dimension can affect a candy greatly. There has to be a great deal of thought about the design of a reshaped or resized bar in order to keep the ratio of ingredients the same as the original. The good news is that the folks at Mars Malaysia have actually manged this very well. When I bit into the bar I felt like I was eating a classic Snickers bar flavour wise. Most impressively is that they managed to get the peanuts throughout the entire bar, no small feat for such a narrow chocolate bar.

The chocolate might be the only real difference. I felt like proportionately this has a bit more chocolate than the classic Snickers bar, it’s not much more, but it’s enough to be noticeable for a candy nerd like me. Fortunately the quality of the chocolate seems to be fairly on point, so it wasn’t that big a problem.

I guess the question I really have about this bar is why. Why would you make a candy bar smaller like this? Maybe it’s a health thing, or maybe kids like smaller candy bars, maybe it’s economics? I just don’t understand why you would take such great effort to make a smaller version of an already fairly perfect candy bar.
