Ritter Sport Cocoa Selection "61% Fine From Nicaragua"

Ritter Sport

This bar is okay, but it brings up a question I’ve had for a while that might seem a little naive for someone who’s supposed to know a lot about candy and chocolate. The question is, why is it better if all of the cocoa beans come from the same country? Let me start by saying that I know that Ritter Sport is not the only chocolate company to source all of their cocoa from one country when they make certain treats. I’m fairly certain I’ve reviewed many chocolate treats that source their cocoa from one country in the past. I just don’t understand why this improves the chocolate. I would think that a carefully blended combination of cocoa beans that have different flavours might also create a fine tasting chocolate as well. I’ll be honest, I’m not a cocoa connoisseur, so I’m not really clear on which countries have the “best” cocoa and why you would want cocoa from one particular country over another.

As for this bar and weather or not having the cocoa from one source made a difference, I can’t really say. I’ll be honest, I’ve had a few Ritter Sport bars in my day and this is not the best one by any stretch of the imagination. I found the chocolate to be a little bit less melty than I normally like. It could be that most of the Ritter Sports bars I’ve had in the past were milk chocolate but I just found that this bar was not as smooth as I would have liked. The cocoa flavour was fine, but nothing that outstanding. Keep in mind that this is in comparison to other Ritter Sport bars. As a stand alone chocolate even the worst Ritter Sport bar is not that bad.

It’s an okay bar, but if you have the choice of other Ritter Sport bars I might suggest you get that instead. The gimmick of this bar is that the cocoa beans are all from the same place, yet there’s little explanation anywhere as to why this improves a chocolate bar. Maybe if I had several of the exact same bars, made exactly the same way, only with cocoa from different parts of the world would I be able to understand why this is important, but nobody makes a collection like that. Even this collection from Ritter Sport which offers bar made from cocoa from different parts of the world, changes the percentage of cocoa for each different bar. It’s actually kind of frustrating.
