I’ve tried a few different treats from Swizzels Matlow over the years, and this might be the best one yet. Honestly it’s not a very high bar has most of the Swizzels Matlow treats I’ve tried have left me more confused than satisfied. I’m not saying that they’re bad, they’ve just been kind of average for me. I don’t really know much about Swizzels Matlow, other than the fact that they appear to be a British treat. I think I picked some up in Ireland and England, but haven’t seen them around the other parts of Europe that I’ve been to. They seem to specialize in taffy, but for the most part the taffy flavours I’ve tried of their are fairly basic, that was until today.
I’ll be honest, I’m not sure why I picked up these packages of Refreshers. I think they may have come in a multi-pack with taffy and other treats. I probably would have never picked them up on their own, unless I read the small print. Underneath the name is says “original lemon flavour”. I don’t think I’ve had too many lemon taffies in my day, and this would have really piqued my interest. The good news is that the lemon flavour of these Refreshers is really on point.
The key to a good lemon flavour is boldness and a slight balance between sweet and sour. These achieve this pretty well. I might say they could have gone a little more sour, but I’m a big fan of sour treats and maybe that’s just my bias. The lemon flavour was great though and it was super strong. Even without reading the fine print there’s no doubt that you’re eating lemon flavoured taffy.
The one constant feature I do enjoy about these Swizzels Matlow treats is that the texture is really nice. It’s soft enough to not hurt your jaw after a few bites, but hard enough to give you a satisfying chew. With the great lemon flavour it was a pleasure to eat this candy all the way. I had my doubts about this taffy when I first bit into it, but I ended up eating three of them in one sitting.
