Petit Pudding

Miyake Brand

There is just something so adorable about tiny desserts. I can’t explain why, but I just love the idea of eating a bunch of tiny desserts over eating one large one. I imagine that’s the appeal of cupcakes. As a version of a Japanese style pudding, I would say that while these are small, where the originaing dessert is average. I’ve had some really great puddings in my life, and while this looks cute, the texture isn’t as delicate as the pudding one might get at a nice bakery or restaurant. I’m sure that it has everything to do with the fact that these have to survive on a store shelf for several weeks.

Flavour wise there’s something a little odd about these. I’m used to normal puddings of this nature to have a creamy custard/vanilla flavour. The brown top (or bottom depending on how you look at it) normally has a slightly burnt sugar flavour. These on the other hand just have a sweet flavour with a hint of coconut. I’m not a huge fan of the coconut flavour, but I’m also happy that they didn’t just leave it sweet with a hint of vanilla.

I don’t think anyone is buying this treat because they love the flavour. While you might enjoy the slight coconut and the fun giggly texture, I think the main reason anyone would buy this is because they like the idea of eating a tiny dessert. In this case it’s even better because you can enjoy it on the go. Visually they actually pulled it off fairly well, so you might call this a complete success. I’m not sure you could actually make it as light and creamy as the original either because it has to sit on store shelves for long periods of time.
