I was ready to not enjoy these. There’s a lot about these that could have gone wrong, but not only did it not go wrong, it went really well. The first issue I was worried about was the quality of the Crunky chocolate. Crunky chocolate is a mixed bag of good and bad chocolate, however I’ve often found that the milk chocolate they use is particularly bad. The milk chocolate on these cookie sticks is different because it’s actually pretty good. I’m not sure if it’s because of the cookie sticks that makes these work, but I found the cocoa flavour to be very pleasant.
The other concern I had was how it would compare to Pocky, the treat I feel like they’re trying to emulate. While they will lose a few points on creativity (assuming Lotte didn’t invent this snack and Meiji ripped it off), these sticks seem a bit thicker and a little more like a less dense pretzel than a cookie. There’s even a slight salty flavour that gives a great balance with the sweet chocolate. The crunch from the stick does overshadow the crunch from the rice crisps, but I can’t really complain since I enjoyed these so much.
There’s no reason these should have worked, but I will not only finish these, but I think I’ll keep an eye open for some of the other variations. It may no be the most original idea (again, assuming they didn’t invent the cookie stick concept), but at least they pulled it off fairly well. These might not only be one of the best Pocky copycats I’ve ever tried, it might be the best Crunky themed treat I’ve ever tasted.
