Rolo "Mini"

Nestlé

This is going to be a difficult review to write, the biggest problem is that I've never actually reviewed a regular Rolo. I'm not sure how this classic treat has slipped through my fingers, but here we are. I'll try to describe this treat without comparing it too much to the original, but I know it's going to come up. The big difference between this treat and the original (see, I told you) is the size. Often when a treat introduces a new size variant, is doesn't work. The problem with scaling treats up or down comes down to the ratio of ingredients. For example, with the Rolo, you can only make the chocolate walls holding in the caramel so thin, or it will break apart the second you touch it. Shrinking a candy like this down perfectly would mean you would have to shrink the thickness of the chocolate walls, and as I said that can be problematic. This is a perfect example of this problem, and I would say that these Rolo “Mini” are a little too chocolate heavy.

There is something missing from the center of these, and I think it's a little bit of flavour, and a little bit more texture. I'm used to Rolos having a burst of caramel when you bite into them. These have more of a slight hint of caramel. While the texture is most affected by this, I did find the flavour to be rather strong on the chocolate front. Having said that, the caramel was not completely overtaken, and there was certainly enough to caramel, it just doesn’t match the original.

There was one other small (no pun intended) problem. I noticed that several of my Rolo Minis had holes in them. I'm not exactly sure why this happened, but I wonder if it's because they did thin out the thickness of the chocolate walls a bit. I didn't have too much of a sticky mess, e.g. the caramel didn't leak out too badly, but the holes were noticeable. This didn't affect anything except the aesthetics, but that is a big part of the candy eating experience.

If you're really into eating small treats, you should give these a try. While they certainly didn't measure up to their regular sized companions, they were pretty tasty. If you like chocolate more than caramel you might even like these more.
