I’d be very interested in learning about how this candy was invented. It’s not that it’s a particularly fascinating or creative candy, it’s just that it’s called Mentos, but I can’t find very much about it that relates back to the original candy. It’s weird because I don’t associate Mentos with a particular flavour, since they do offer candies in many flavours, I associate them with small round candies that at first appear to be hard candies but quickly become very chewy. Often when a candy company spreads their brand, there’s something about the new candy that ties it back to the original, but I’m having a hard time figuring out if these Mentos Incredible Chew have any connection at all.
The only thing that might connect them to Mentos, could just be a figment of my imagination. I feel like there might be a slight menthol flavour to these chews. Again, it could be my brain reading the word Mentos and imagining the slight cool flavour. If they did put a cool flavour in these it’s ever so subtle, almost too subtle to detect. So that might be the one connecting feature, but only if I’m not imagining it.
Objectively, as a candy these chews are fine. They look sort of like Bonkers, an old discontinued candy from the 80s (which I think should be brought back). The grape flavour is nice, a little bit tart, but not too sour. The texture is a pleasant chew, enough to be satisfying, but not so extreme that my jaw hurt after eating a few of them. They’re nothing mind blowing or unique, but tasty and fun enough.
The word “Mentos” represents a candy with a particular texture, and these do not have it. I’m not sure if these still are Mentos in any way, but they’re not disappointing and a fine option if you’re looking for a simple chewy treat.
