Mango Sticky Rice

Nestlé

There’s parts where this ice cream really achieved the goal of being like authentic mango sticky rice, and a few parts where it missed the mark. The good thing about this ice cream bar is the flavour. It’s most certainly mango flavoured, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was even real mango. It’s both the first and last thing I tasted when I ate this bar. The other great addition was the slight coconut flavour, as all authentic mango sticky rice should have coconut sauce. The thing is the coconut sauce should never overpower, it should just be a hint. Finally, there even seemed to be a slight rice flavour to this ice cream. I’m not sure how they did it, or if it was just my brain connecting the mango and coconut flavour, but it was there.

The rice while fascinating, could have been more present. The texture and flavour of the sticky rice are vital parts of mango sticky rice, and it just felt like it was missing. You could have told me this was some kind of mango tropical drink theme and I might have bought it too. I wonder if it’s actually possible to add real sticky rice into this treat, to give you something to chew on. It could also use the slight saltiness that many sticky rice add to mango sticky rice.

You might worry that the rice could freeze and make this ice cream too solid, but that takes me to a technical problem I had. This ice cream is sold in Thailand, a place that’s pretty hot all the time, and sometimes hotter still. This ice cream was really light and it melted almost instantly. It was a hot sticky mess in seconds. So, if adding real sticky rice could increase the strength in any way, that’s a victory in my book.
