Lay's "White Cheddar"

Frito-Lay

I feel like the world needs more cheese flavoured potato chips. There are so many amazing varieties of cheese out there, but very few cheese flavoured potato chips. If you think about it, it makes total sense. Can you even name one potato product (snack or otherwise) that isn’t improved with cheese?

The other great thing about these chips is what’s printed at the top of the bag “inspired by Smartfood”. I’ve been on record saying that I believe that Smartfood popcorn has the best cheese flavour of any snack food. There’s something about the cheese powder they use that’s both tasty and satisfying. It’s one of my go to snacks when I’m looking for something that gives me comfort. It only makes sense then that Lay’s would take this amazing cheese flavour and blend it with their potato chips. The only question is what too them so long? I feel like childhood me would have really appreciated a Smartfood/Lay’s potato chip crossover.

I feel like the only reason one might see these chips as not stellar is if you compared them directly to Smartfood. While I went on at great lengths about how much potato chips and cheese go together, I feel like cheese and popcorn go together a little bit better. This is particularly strange since I could name several instances where cheese and corn would not be optimal. Comparing these two products however is silly, because at this very moment we don’t have to pick, we can have both. In fact mixing them might prove to make a very interesting snack indeed.

The only true unfortunate thing about these chips is the fact that they seem to be here for a “limited time”. I find that when a treat has these words on the package it means one of two things, either it’s truly a special thing that they only plan on doing once, or they’re testing the market. I’m hoping that in a few months we’ll see these back for good by popular demand.
