This bag of simple potato chips is so unique, but also so simple at the same time. The uniqueness comes from its origins. I got this bag of chips on the street from a vendor in Myanmar. The people selling the chips were also the people who were making the chips. This means that if the chips weren’t great, the people selling them could make changes. It also means that they have a lot of interest in their chips being good, because they’d go out of business quickly if they weren’t. I’ve had lots of street food in my life, but this is the first time I’ve had potato chips made on the street.
The good news for the folks at Ko Sai is their chips are amazing. They’re just simple salted (or plain) potato chips, but they’re made perfectly. There is nothing to hide when you’re talking about salted potato chips, few ingredients means that every aspect has to be high quality and balanced. These chips are salty, but not too salty and they’re not too oily either. You can taste the potato, but you can also taste a nice baked flavour as well. The crispiness is perfect, with my only complaint being that I like my chips a little thicker cut. It’s really a minor thing, and more of a personal preference than a real criticism.
I never thought I’d find some of the best potato chips I’ve ever eaten on the streets of Myanmar, but here we are. Another great feature of these chips is the sizes they come in and how they sell them. There are threes sizes to choose from, the small and medium are pretty close to standard potato chip sizes, but the large is huge, probably about the size of two average pillows. They also give you a small bag of sample chips every time you buy a bag. This allows you to avoid opening your bag before you get home.
From a packaging standpoint, these chips are either too simple or totally brilliant. Many chip companies decorate their bag with appetizing images and text. Ko Sai offers something more unique. When you see this bag you instantly know what you’re getting, the only information you need is their phone number to order more chips when you finish the one you just ate. It’s kind of brilliant, let the chips sell the chips.
