I’m pretty sure that Hershey’s did not invent the small milk chocolate egg with a pastel candy shell. The fact that this is a copycat candy is probably its biggest downfall. It did however manage to achieve something that many copycat candies almost never do, it might be better than the original. I happened to have eaten these Eggies with many other small milk chocolate eggs with pastel candy shells, including the famous Cadbury Mini Eggs. As it turns out, I think I like these more.

Sometimes when you have a situation like this, it’s hard to figure out why one candy is better than another. This is not the case, I can tell you exactly why I think these Eggies are better than a Cadbury Mini Egg and it’s all about the Eggies being bigger. While they say bigger isn’t always better, in this case that’s wrong. The reason the size has made these Eggies better is all about ratio of ingredients. The shell on the Eggie is the same thickness as the shell on the other small eggs, but there’s more chocolate. While I didn’t know I need more chocolate the last time I ate a Cadbury Mini Egg, it turns out a little more chocolate actually makes these better. They’re a little less sweet and a little more chocolaty.

It’s hard to say how much better or worse the quality of chocolate is compared to the Cadbury Mini Eggs, but it doesn’t matter. These Eggies make up for it with more chocolate that’s good enough, and the flavour balance is just that much better. Historically I’ve had a love hate relationship with Hershey’s chocolate, but in this case I feel like they just made it work really well.
