Never before have I tasted a chip that’s put into question what I thought a corn chip might be. Most of us have a pretty good idea in our head about what we might expect when we taste something called a corn chip. Fritos or Doritos are probably the first kind of corn chips that comes to many people’s mind. It’s basically a chip that’s made of corn, that often has some kind of flavouring. Cheese as well as spicy are common flavours associated with this kind of corn chip. Today however I’ve bit into something that is fairly defined as a corn chip, but nothing like a Dorito or Frito chip at all.

Flavour wise I think these corn chips taste more like corn than most standard corn chips. I would describe the corn flavour of these chips to be more like a sweet corn. I would say it’s almost like biting into a crunchy version of canned corn. Speaking of crunch, these chips have a fairly unique texture. I would describe the texture as being like a very thin cheese puffs (only without the cheese flavour). The odd thing is that they’ve shaped these snacks to look like chips, only they’re obviously formed and not cut.

I really can’t over emphasize how much these taste like corn, but how much they don’t taste like common corn chips. It’s really opened my eyes about corn chips as I used to know them, and how much or how little they taste like corn. I’m not saying they shouldn’t be called corn chips, as I’m pretty sure they’re almost entirely made with corn. I’d just be interested in comparing these to corn chips.

I will say that I’m not sure I totally enjoyed these snacks. The mystery and uniqueness is interesting, but I don’t think I’ll ever seek them out in the future. The puffed texture made them feel a little like I was eating Styrofoam, and the corn flavour is really too powerful.
