When I started this website a few people suggested that it wouldn’t last and that I would eventually run out of snacks to review. The fact that this is the second bag of nacho cheese Doritos that I’ve reviewed might lead you to think that maybe I have run out of snacks. The thing is, over the last few years I’ve learned that not all snacks by the same name are necessarily equal. Some are actually totally different. This bag of corn chips from Korea for instance has a few differences from North American nacho cheese Doritos on the package alone. The first thing I noticed is that the bag is decorated with a block of cheese as well as a bowl of what I can only assume is some kind of melted cheese. The brand is also fascinating, as it seems to be made by Lotte, a brand that’s very well known for Asian treats. Finally the name is a bit different as it uses the word “flavor” next to the cheese. This either means that there are stricter laws about labelling snacks in Korea (where this is from) or maybe there’s less cheese.
Flavour and texture wise I would say that these are pretty close to the Doritos I remember. Texture wise in particular I’d say they’re pretty spot on. Flavour wise I feel like there might be a few subtle differences though. I can’t tell for sure as I don’t have a North American bag of nacho cheese Doritos to compare. My feeling is that these have a slightly creamier flavour, and maybe a slight hint of spice. Both of these would make sense in the Asian market as cheddar cheese is not as popular in Asia as some of the smoother cheeses, and spicy foods are very popular.
If there are differences, they’re very subtle. I would say that if you’re craving a classic bag of nacho cheese Doritos, these will hit the spot. Unless you’re over analyzing it like I do, you’ll likely not notice any kind of difference at all. Again, it’s so subtle that it might just be in my head. This is all good news as frankly nacho cheese Doritos are one of the better corn chips out there, and I don’t feel like there’s any reason to make big changes no matter where you sell them.
