Alpenliebe "Cola and Cream"

Perfetti van Melle

I have to say that I was all ready to kind of hate this lollipop. It was a gift from a friend, so right off the bat I don’t want to blame her for this assumption. The reason I wanted to dislike this lollipop is because of what I was expecting. I was expecting a lollipop with a weird combination of milk and cola. What I in fact got was a really fascinating combination of milk and cola. I guess I shouldn’t have judged it so soon as I actually don’t mind adding milk to my cola in real life.

When I first started this lollipop I didn’t really taste the milk. All it seemed to be is a cola lollipop without any kind of acidity. For those who don’t understand, cola is actually a really acidic drink, and the acidic flavour is often the part of cola candies that is missing. If you’ve ever had a cola candy that tasted like cola, but still didn’t taste right, chances are it was missing some acidity. That’s exactly where this lollipop started, as a really bad cola flavoured treat.

As I continued the acidity only became less and less, but the cola flavour remained strong, it was weird. The thing is, the creaminess of the milk portion became stronger as well. Suddenly I realized that they’ve actually managed to get the cola and milk combination flavour exactly right. It makes sense that the milk would kill the acidity, it just took a little bit for the strong creaminess of the milk flavour to kick in.

Once these two flavours balanced this lollipop worked really well. I wasn’t really expecting this to work at all, first of all for the flavour combination but then getting these two flavours to balance out well. Surprisingly it really worked, in both cases.
