The most common question I get when people find out that I review candy is “what’s your favourite candy?”. I have two answers to that question, one is a British Kit Kat bar, but the more interesting answer (in my opinion) is “something that’s new and creative”. Having done this site for many years, and having eaten many different candies, I get really tired of eating the same thing over and over again. Often when I start a review by telling this story, it means I’m about to tell you that I ate a candy that I’ve eaten a million times before and that it’s totally unoriginal, but not today.
This bar came onto my radar a few months ago because it was trending on social media. I was a little scared of this bar because many things that trend on social media look really cool, but taste mediocre. When beautiful candy tastes boring it’s really disappointing. This bar however has broken that trend. Better yet this bar also fits perfectly into the category of “something that’s new and creative” too. I won’t say it’s the perfect candy bar (see the British Kit Kat for that), but I will say that it checks many boxes in the candy world.
This bar is very unique, it’s dark chocolate filled with pistachio past and kunafa. Kunafa seems to be small noodle like bits of deep fried dough. When you break open this bar you’re instantly shown the bright green interior (this is what’s making it popular on social media right now), but that’s not all that you’re getting. When you bite into the squares you find that there’s a very unique crunchy texture in this green filling, and that’s the kunafa. I would best describe it as almost a filo dough crossed with a deep fried noodle. It doesn’t really add much to the flavour, but the texture is really unique.
Flavour wise the chocolate and pistachio really are the kings in this bar. The blend of pistachio and chocolate is fairly balanced, but it might lean a little to the chocolate side. Having said that, I don’t think I’ve ever had such a strong pistachio flavoured bar before in my life, and I like it. I’m not sure I’d want more pistachio than you get already either.
This bar is beautiful, it has some really unique flavours, and a really interesting texture. I truly wasn’t expecting this trendy bar to actually taste so good. I don’t normally suggest that people go out and try and get onto this trendy treat, but this time I think I’ll make an exception. If you have the means, pick one up.
