Snax Sational has an entire line of popcorn where they use various candy and cookie (as well as cereal) treats mixed into their popcorn. The unique thing about their treats is that they use the actual treat mixed into the popcorn, as opposed to flavouring the popcorn similarly to the treat. In other words, they would add pieces of Snickers bars into the their popcorn as opposed to just making a Snickers flavoured popcorn. I’ve tasted a few of these popcorn flavours with a mixed degree of success. The reason I say all of this is that this particular flavour should be the easiest, because people already add M&M’s to their popcorn so it’s kind of a no brainer, or so I thought.
This popcorn tastes enough like M&M’s, but that’s only because M&M’s really just taste like chocolate. The popcorn has additional popcorn to stick the M&M’s to the popcorn. There is also the occasional candy crunch that goes along with the popcorn crunch, but it’s kind of buried. In general this popcorn ticks all of the boxes promised, although I could use more M&M’s, but it’s not a huge deal. The problem is that I have a treat that I keep comparing to this, and this popcorn is missing something.
The tradition of adding candy to popcorn is something that came about at movie theatres. People have been known to add M&M’s or even Skittles to their theatre popcorn to create a new movie snack. I’ve tried this before with various candy treats and more often than not it works really well. M&M’s and Skittles are the favourite to do this, so you’d think this would just work the same way, but it doesn’t. The thing missing here is salt. The key to this movie snack working so well is the balance of salty and sweet. This popcorn has the sweet in great amount, but no salty at all. I feel like this balance is what makes this theatre version work so well, and I feel like I’d enjoy this so much more with the salt.
I can’t really complain too much about the lack of salty in this bag of popcorn as there is not promise of a salty and sweet treat. I just couldn’t help thinking about how much better the version I had at my local theatre, and that maybe the folks at Snax Sational should give the salty sweet combination a try.
