Alluvia Chocolatier "Dark Chocolate Coffee"

Alluvia Chocolatier

This bar really made me think about the similarities to the flavours of chocolate and coffee. When you think about it, they have very similar flavour profiles and the flavours can be used almost interchangeably. For me it’s odd because in general I don’t like coffee, but I really love chocolate. I don’t even mind bitter chocolate, which is even closer to coffee. The reason this bar made me think about the comparison of these two flavours is the way that the flavours seem to come through.

When you first bite into the bar you’re met with a slightly sweet, but mostly bitter flavour. I would describe it as a chocolate flavour, but after a few seconds I was doubting my thoughts. I thought that maybe they blended the chocolate and coffee flavour so well that they almost matched. However, after a few seconds the bitter chocolate flavour changes, and soon my mouth was full of a very coffee flavour. I could eventually tell the difference between these two flavours, but for a few seconds I really couldn’t. It’s as if they’re similar, but also different at the same time.

Other than the thoughts about the similarities between coffee and chocolate that this bar brings up, I would rank this bar as okay. It’s advertised as a fine chocolate, but honestly I’ve had better. The cocoa flavour is okay, but could be stronger, maybe to balance with the very strong coffee flavour that creeps up on you. The texture was also okay, but I’ve had much better chocolate bars that were far less fancy.

The coffee flavour is a tough thing for me to review, since as I mentioned I’m not a big fan. Allison (who is a coffee fan) didn’t like it that much. One thing that I thought about was the fact that this is a Vietnamese chocolate bar featuring a coffee flavour, however the chose not to flavour it like Vietnamese Coffee. Vietnamese coffee is a super strong coffee filled with condensed milk. I’m thinking that a shot of sweet cream would have made this bar much more tolerable for people like me who don’t really love coffee, and would give it a shot of authenticity as well.
