I have to clear up a few things before I start this review. My assumption is that these chips are either beer flavoured, or that they’re just supposed to taste good with beer. I also want to say that in the entire time I’ve ever been reviewing snacks, I can’t say that I’ve ever had a snack that I knew so little about, yet it disappointed me so much. While I don’t hate the flavour or texture of these crisps, they disappointed me so much that I’m just not very happy with them.
To answer the first question... I’m still not really sure if they’re beer flavoured or if they’re just a good accompaniment with beer. I couldn’t describe these crisps as plain potato and salt because there’s both something sweet and something a little spicy about them. If I was to use my imagination a little, I might say that the sweet is an attempt to give them a slight beer flavour. I might even go so far as to say that the sweet might have even been caused by real beer (I don’t know as I can’t read the package). Having said all of that, if they’re not some kind of weird beer flavour, I can’t tell you what flavour they’re supposed to be.
The flavour is a little disappointing and weird, but the texture is what really disappointed me. Based on the package, I was expecting rippled potato chips, but what I got was an odd collection of small broken squares. Worse yet, these crisps were more like a Pringle style of chip, where it’s made up of things like corn starch and potato powder. The weird squares had no ripples at all, and in fact it was just a bag of broken boring squares.
The marketing team and package designers of this treat managed to convince me to buy these, but the makers kind of failed to give me even the most basic of crisp (chip). I would have been super happy if the flavour was obviously beer, but I wouldn’t have been totally disappointed if they designed a flavour that might go well with beer. Sweet and spicy to me seems like they might have missed both marks.
